This week on the Fit Dads Podcast we sat down with one of the bravest young men I think I've ever met.
When Brad mentioned him as a guest I was a bit unsure as to whether it would work. Turns out it was one of the most inspiring stories to date.
(Moral of the story, disregard everything I think)
Sam Bagshaw has blown up on social media recently. Amassing over half a million followers across all platforms.
His Tik Tok account, aptly named @stammerexperiences, is a beautiful insight into how he navigates life with a stammer.
It's raw. It's honest. It's endearing.
From ordering takeaways, booking appointments, navigating drive-throughs. Day to day things we take for granted become real challenges for Sam.
He spent his early years not being vocal enough. His family and friends would often finished his sentences and decide a lot of things for him. He watched from the sidelines as others took to social media, expressing their views, documenting their experiences.
He found himself agreeing with others in fear of not being able to get his point across. Sitting at home eating food he didn't really want because he couldn't find the confidence to correct the order from a fast food place.
A couple years ago Sam decided enough was enough.
Instead of shying away from these interactions, like he did for many years, he would prove to the world, and himself, that even with a stammer, he can live the life he wants to live.
And so @stammerexperiences was born.
A place where Sam would not only document his day to day interactions with the world, but overcome some confidence issues in the process.
A frighteningly bold move that in his own admission, would make him either sink or swim.
In Sam's videos, you see him struggle, stumble, get stuck on words, persevere and eventually overcome.
Viewers watch on during these nail biting, often awkward, encounter's, dying to see how this interaction ends.
Far from the social media norm, where videos are short, sharp, concise and highly edited to capture our immediate attention.
Alternatively, Sam's videos are unedited, drawn out conversations which highlight the real and raw battle his stammer presents.
In our conversation, Sam admits there's a few nasty comments, but most are championing him from their screen.
The reaction we got to Sam's promo video backed this is up. We were overwhelmed with positive comments, all detailing how inspiring Sam was, not only to people with a stammer, but anyone who is suffering with confidence issues.
Sam's relentless pursuit to tackle difficult situations head on is why this was one of my favourite podcasts so far.
Be patient with this one, and you'll walk away with a tonne of inspiration.
